District spread: which districts host the most counselling colleges in Telangana

Where you study shapes internships, commutes and placement access as much as which branch you pick. We counted every college in the Telangana EAPCET 2024 counselling list — 159 institutions across 23 districts — to see where the seats actually are. The answer: overwhelmingly, in a ring around Hyderabad.

Three districts, six of every ten colleges
Medchal-Malkajgiri, Rangareddy and Hyderabad together host 94 of 159 colleges — 59.1% of the entire counselling list. Strictly speaking, Hyderabad city proper ranks only third; it's the two districts wrapping around it — Medchal-Malkajgiri to the north (44 colleges) and Rangareddy to the south and west (37) — that dominate, because that's where campus-scale land along the Outer Ring Road exists.
The composition tells its own story. Of Rangareddy's 37 colleges, all 37 are private. Medchal-Malkajgiri is 42 private plus one university campus and one self-financed unit. Government and university institutions are the exception everywhere: the flagship public campuses (JNTUH UCEST, OU College of Engineering) sit inside Hyderabad district, while the other JNTUH constituent colleges are deliberately scattered — Jagitial, Mahabubabad, Wanaparthy, Manthani, Sultanpur, Palair — one college anchoring each of several rural districts.
What this means for your web options
- CSE is everywhere colleges are. 153 of the 159 colleges in the 2024 list offered CSE — so district choice, not branch availability, is the real filter.
- A "Hyderabad-area college" usually isn't in Hyderabad. If a college matters to you for city access, check the actual campus location — Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy campuses can be 25-40 km from the city core.
- Rural district = usually the lone government option. In 12 of 23 districts there are at most two counselling colleges. If you're targeting a seat near home outside the capital region, your realistic list may be one JNTUH constituent college — check its closing rank early.
- The pattern is stable. The 2025 list looks nearly identical: 163 colleges, with Medchal-Malkajgiri (43), Rangareddy (37) and Hyderabad (14) again on top.
The concentration cuts both ways. Competition and choice cluster around the capital, but so do traffic and hostel costs. A well-ranked constituent university college in Jagitial or Sultanpur can be a calmer, cheaper route to the same degree.
College lists, district assignments and participating institutions change every counselling cycle. Verify the current list against the official TG EAPCET counselling notifications from TGCHE and, for AP colleges, APSCHE, before submitting your options.
